The Anatomy of an MCCB: Understanding the Components That Protect Your Power
2026-09-15
Molded Case Circuit Breakers (MCCBs) are the silent guardians of modern electrical systems. From industrial control panels to commercial distribution boards, these devices automatically interrupt current when a fault or overload is detected. But what actually happens inside that sealed molded case when a fault occurs? Let’s break down the key components that make MCCBs reliable and effective.

According to industry standards, an MCCB is composed of five main components:
The molded case (frame) provides an insulated housing that mounts and protects all internal components. It minimizes exposure to dirt, dust, and moisture, ensuring reliable operation in harsh environments.
The operating mechanism is a spring-loaded metallic apparatus that allows manual opening and closing of the breaker. When the breaker is tripped or manually operated, the mechanism causes the contacts to snap open or closed rapidly.
The arc extinguishing system is critical for safety. When contacts separate under load, an electric arc forms. The arc chute, consisting of a stack of deionizing plates, breaks this arc into a series of short arcs and extinguishes them through cooling.
The contacts carry the current during normal operation. They are typically made from silver-based alloys to ensure low resistance and long service life.
The trip unit is the “brain” of the MCCB. Traditional thermal-magnetic trip units use a bimetallic strip to respond to sustained overloads and a magnetic solenoid to respond to instantaneous short-circuit currents.

At Zhejiang Baofeng Mechanical & Electrical, we understand that the reliability of an MCCB depends entirely on the quality of its internal components. Our M1 series full set of metal fittings includes precision-engineered conductive systems, big supports, connecting rods, magnetic Yoke Plates, and static contacts, all manufactured to meet rigorous quality standards. For example, our M1-63 conductive system uses contacts from Shanghai PEOPLE Electric, bimetal from Foshan FSTB, and copper material from Huifeng T2/T3, ensuring optimal electrical and thermal performance. Every component is designed to work in perfect harmony, delivering the protection your electrical systems demand.
